Practicalities - Transfers

From UK by car.

From Calais it takes about 10 hours to drive down. The best route is probably through Lyon. We have stopped in Dijon (previously the capital of Burgundy) on the way down as it has a lovely town centre with good hotels and fine burgundy restaurants. It is just under four hours from Montchavin.

By plane.

The nearest airports are Lyon (about 2.5 hours away), Geneva (about 2 hours away), Grenoble and Chambery (both about 1 hour away). Lyon and especially Geneva has lots of flights from all directions. The flight timetables from Grenoble and Chambery are more limited and often more expensive, and both of these airports are prone to being closed if the weather is bad! Please be aware that the transfer times can be significantly longer in peak season, we always allow an extra hour or two on the way back – just in case.

Car Hire.

Hiring cars is much cheaper in France than Switzerland, so if you arrive in Geneva hire the car from the French side. It is a bit more difficult to find on the way back, but the savings are significant. A lot of search engines seem to go for the Swiss side by default. Other than that we have always found the costs of different firms roughly similar.

By bus.

There are bus transfers from Geneva to Montchavin. You will need to change several times, in the past at Aime La Plagne and La  Plagne Central. The journey takes 3-4 hours.

By train.

There are trains from Geneva to Bourg St Maurice. You can then take a taxi from Bourg St Maurice to Montchavin, about 15-20 minutes away.

By Taxi.

There are taxi transfers from all of the airports to Montchavin. They are all relatively expensive (unless you are travelling in a big party), though obviously very convenient and quick.
